Breastfeeding fashions, burp cloth blunders & black fly encounters

By Heather Ledeboer | Category: The Journey of Motherhood

After visiting Minnesota last month, I was reminded how thankful I am that we don’t have to deal with insects in Idaho, at least not nearly to the same degree.  However, all it took was a look through some of the photos from this past June to remind me of a bug encounter in my own backyard that could make even some seasoned Minnesotans shake their head.  I was attached by . . . Minnesota Black Flies, in Idaho!  The nerve of those little flies attacking on broad daylight and they go right for your head and neck.  You can’t feel them bite and they inject some sort of blood thinner so suddenly you are dripping blood, trust me, it isn’t pretty.  Want to see what my neck looked like?

And man did they itch.  I could only imagine what kind of strange disease people surely thought I had.  It isn’t practical to wear a turtle neck in June, but I did consider it.

I am getting used to looking frumpy.  This is a common look for me lately:

I trust that other breastfeeding moms can relate.

Here is another nice look that I am perfecting.  It reminded me of the reason the BurpCatcher was invented—smart mom that invented that one.

I have some more lovely fashion tid-bits to share but I will save that for another time.  Please feel free to share some stories of your own so I don’t feel so bad ;) !

  1. Breast feeding is the best for babies up to two years, just don’t mind what mess it can do to you like at the last picture..

  3. Thanks for the laugh – Us mom’s must stick together. Often it’s laugh or cry, and usually it’s our choice. I try to save the crying and tears for emergencies ;-)

  4. I still rock that second look and I’ve been done breastfeeding for a while – now it’s because my son loves to chew on my shirt when I’m carrying him!

  5. Tanner is sooooo adorable! I just giggled at that last picture. I’ve been covered like that no telling how many times. Now, breastfeeding and fashion – HA!! I just continue in my not-so-large maternity shirts since they’re easy to yank up at a moment’s notice.

  6. I’m definetly with you on this one! My 4 year old daughter often reminds me that my shirt smells like spit-up! Hmmm, I hadn’t noticed :)

  8. Oh man, I have had many a trail of vomit down my back, down my shirt, down my pants, and in my shoes. Gotta love those unpredictable little urpy people.

I love that you linked up with me today! It made me feel really happy.

And I didn’t know you got any of those fly bites! Yikes. At least you had a legitimate reason for having marks like that on your neck. I had three spots on the back of my neck that looked like that, but I couldn’t blame an insect. Mine were from ZITS. Seriously, I’m 30 years old and have never had a neck zit in my life… I’m writing the Board of Aging immediately because they are ripping me off.

@Kira @ Kissing the Joy, I felt pretty happy to be able to link up with you. In fact as I wrote the post I was reminding myself “don’t forget to link with Kira’s blog” and was so excited to do so! :)

Ya the fly bites weren’t pretty, I am so glad they are done now. Neck zits eh? That makes me giggle, I haven’t had a neck zit either. . .

  9. I totally relate to the leaking and burp moments! I’ve breastfed now total of 7 years (I have 3 kids) and have had plenty of those! I’ve also had to encounter diaper leakage on multiple occasions. There is nothing that compares to being covered in your own baby’s poop. :) Thank you for sharing your moments!

@Reija Eden, Ah yes the poop is also one of those things that we all must experience:)! Thanks for reminding me that I am very much NOT alone in my journey though the laundry, spit up, etc. . .
