  1. Once my kids get older I will leave special notes in their lunch kits and in secret places for them to find throughout the day reminding them how much I adore them.

  2. We are not into giving extravagant gifts for valentine’s day, be we do like exchanging cards. We also like to get a little gift that we know the other would love, not all the corny stuffy! Ever since our first child was born almost 2 years ago, we have started a tradition of getting him Valentine’s Day books!! We love to read together, and Donny loves to get new books!!

  3. Make homemade valentines, decorate the house with all sorts of hearts, conversation candies, and bake yummy heart treats!

  4. I want to start doing a valentine’s Day scavenger hunt or a treasure hunt that ends up leading to a present of small valentines day trinkets. All kids love treasure hunts.

  5. My daughter is two and a half. Before she was born I would always make heart shaped pancakes on Valentine’s Day for my husband. Now that she is old enough to understand the holiday and know what a heart is I would like to start this tradition with her. She loves pancakes and I know she would love to eat them shaped like hearts on that day.

  6. I love putting little hats with flowers on my daughter. It makes me remember that the Minnesota winter will come to an end soon and all of the flowers will come out. Hope she wins it!

  7. I love finding special Valentines for my girl to take to school that share Jesus somehow. It’s not very often this is so simple to do in school!

  8. Those are so cute! My daughter loves hats. We don’t really have a Valentine’s Tradition ourselves, but we participate in a friend’s. They have a big party for kids and mommy’s and go all out for it. We’ve been going since my son was only a couple of months old.

  9. We always try to do a special red, pink and white themed dinner with candles and soft music. We secretly make homemade valentines for each member of the family and share them after dinner. We also make that night a TV Free night and play board games for the rest of the evening.

  10. I have a preschooler and he has to give out a valentine to all his classmates. We made them last year and plan to continue it this year. I’m planning on buying lolli pop suckers and fold over a scrap paper (kinda like a match box cover) We’ll seel it w/ tape and I’ll have my DS decorate them w/ stickers and stamps. Looking fwd to next year when I’ll have two LO’s in school.

  11. As a family we cut out hearts all different shapes, sizes, and colors including some from doily paper and foil. We make valentines day cards to send to relatives and to give to classroom friends and we write love notes to each other and hide them in plain sight for each other to find.

  12. As my children grow… I think it would be awesome to make cards and cookies and take them to our elderly friends and family members who have lost their valentine.

    [Reply]

  13. My daughter is now at a good age for making cutout cookies, so I would like to start that Valentine’s tradition with her.

  14. Heather…these hats/purses are ADORABLE!! What a unique idea!! I’m keeping my fingers crossed!! Since having my daughter 19 months ago, I have wanted to start traditions with her for every holiday possible!! My husband thinks I’m a little crazy…maybe I am!! For Valentine’s Day I want her to know the importance of love and empathy so we are going to hand make Valentine’s to give to family and friends. I’m also planning on having a “heart hunt” in the morning…we do it at Easter…why not Valentine’s Day?!?! I’m anxious to see what others people post about. Thanks for all the ideas!!

  15. My kids make Valentine cards and decorate them with stickers, glitter paint, and messages. Then, we take them to the retirement home in our town and pass them out to the residents. It’s great to see the looks on their faces when they receive a homemade Valentine from a child. It’s also a great way to get your kids involved in community service. My kids LOVE making others so happy with a simple Valentine that they enjoyed creating.

  17. My mom died when I was 23, almost 12 years ago. I still miss her every day and most especially at Holidays. She made everything special…. One of the things she used to do for my sisters and me was give us fun, new, red or pink or hearts undies for Valentine’s Day. So I’m continuing that tradition for my girls. I love you, Mom. xo -Robyn

  21. I make it a special day for daddy with suprise notes all around the house with corny sayings- my daughter is 15 months old and I look forward to involving her in that. I also want to find a contructive way to do something outside ourselves, for the community, especially those who may not feel loved in the future when she gets older

  22. Once my kids are in school, I’ll put ‘love notes’ in there lunch boxes. My mom did it for me and it’s something I cherished throughout the years.

I am looking forward to making heart-shaped pancakes or sandwiches for my family to celebrate Valentine’s Day. I love all the ideas from everyone else on this post. You are all so creative! :)

  26. Something my husband does every now and then is cut out and hide several hearts around the house before he leaves for work in the morning. This is something he’s done as a sweet gesture just for me, but now that my daughter is 2, she enjoys finding these hearts with me, too. For Valentine’s day, I’d like to hide hearts just for her to find all day. She likes me to make pancakes in different shapes, so we’ll do pancake hearts for breakfast, and make use of our heart shaped cookie cutter with other snacks and meals throughout the day, too. Growing up, my dad would always buy each of us our favorite ice cream. This is a fun tradition I’d like to continue when our kids are older.

What I really like to do is AFTER Valentine’s day, I buy up the box sets with stickers, and cute little sayings, and so on. Then my daughter and I use those all year long to make notes for friends and family. Everyone loves a little love note!

  34. I just had a baby girl about 6 months ago and we have a 13 year old boy as well so I will be starting a new tradition in our family for V-Day where everyone will have a little hunt for their gift by following kisses to their new jammies and card, and I plan to have pictures taken of the kids for the family. The hat would be great for my little girl this year! (as she doesn’t have quite enough hair yet) Very Cute!

  42. My husband has been telling me of how he looks forward to shopping for flowers with our son. He wants to go to the store, look around at the flowers and chocolates and make a unanimous decision on what to buy for me and think of ways to surprise me with them. Our son is 3 months old at the moment, but I could see that my husband is already excited about their outing together.
I on the other hand, back little cupcakes and decorate them with roses, conversation hearts, and chocolate dipped strawberries to hand out to our neighbors and friends. I look forward to having my little one help me out with the icing and mixing.

  44. We always have a special dinner together as a family. My hubby and I always spend Heart Day with our kiddos. Because they are our hearts. My girls love to decorate the house for their Daddy, we make cake cakes (cupcakes) or cookies, open up prizes from mommy and Daddy (this year my 3 year old has SEVERAL requests), we look at all their heart day cards from school. Just a fun day to take time and have fun with our kiddos. I would love to start a new little tradition that involved making a craft or doing something else fun and different that we can all do together. :)

  45. Valentine’s day is a family day for us. We always do something together, whether it be the zoo, or even just a picnic at the park. We tell our 2 girls that it is a day set aside to remind people we care about that we love them. We make sure to make gifts ( cards and baked treats) and don’t buy anything so that we show them that it is the thought that Should really count! :)

  46. I want to make my kids feel so special and loved right here at home on Valentine’s day – my mom always did such a great job on holidays and I remember her just making such a big deal of how she loved us so – I’m trying to do the same for our little kiddos! Decorations and candies add to the celebration :)

  47. Growing up my mom always got us something pink or red for valentines day. Weather it was a shirt, notebook, or some new socks. Now that I have 2 kids of my own I do the same things. This year I am so excited I found red puppy jammies for my son and colorful heart jammies for my daughter.

  49. Construction paper, doilies, stickers, glitter and plenty of glue! Mix in a very active 2 year old boy and we’ll see what kind of Valentine greetings the family will all end up getting! I’m not going to spruce up his creations either…they will be his very own work!
    Thanks Heather!

  51. Darling hat/purse. My daughter is a bit young for much an appreciation for valentines day, but we plan on making cards this year to mail out with her handprints on them. Should be cute! And could quite possibly be caos in the making! :)

    [Reply]

  52. We like to cut out and decorate the cards and give them to our family members. We sometimes go outside of norm and celebrate on a random day – on the 13th of Feb, for instance, just because we believe love should not be celebrated only on one particular day, but every day! Love to God, family, friends!

  60. One Valentine’s Day I discovered a box of SweerTart hearts in my coat pocket from my dad. It made me feel so loved that he thought of it. I would like to hide a treat in my children’s coat pockets on Valentine’s Day too. And each year I would tell them about their Grandpa. (My son was an infant last year, so this will be my starting year!)

  64. It just so happens that my birthday falls on Valentine’s Day so we will have lots to celebrate on this day! I can’t wait til my 10 month old daughter will be old enough so we can bake cookies and sweet treats together. I’d want her to know that gifts from the heart don’t have to cost a thing.

    [Reply]

  65. Last Valentine’s Day when my daughter was three-months old, my son, who was 11 years old, made her a card and gave her a gift {one of his formerly much-cherished teddy bears). I would like to establish the tradition of my children, no matter how old thet are, where they live or to whom they are (or are not) married, always showing how much they love each other by exchanging tokens of affection for Valentine’s Day.

    [Reply]

  66. wow, i must admit that this is something i have never thought about. my little one isn’t even 2 yet, so this will be all new for us. but what an exciting challenge to put in front of me. i think i will try to incorporate something pink, something “princess-y”, and of course something chocolate each year. and hopefully daddy will start his own tradition of showing her that she is his little sweetheart too by doing something special just from him.

  67. One of the things we have already done and plan to continue is making handmade cards for those we love. I have the hobby of stamping and have enjoyed teaching my young girls how to do this also. They have a blast. This year I’d also like to make heart cutout cookies with my Mom’s famous sugar cookie recipe. The only thing is her’s always seem to taste so much better than when I make them. We may just have to have Grandma come over and help us.

    [Reply]

  68. We make “edible” valentines! For each child in my little boy’s class we make large heart shaped sugar cookies, frost them and then write the classmates name on it! The kids like these much better than the little generic valentines day cards that come in the box, and it is a lot of fun for mommy to do together with her boy. (of course, we make one for daddy, too!)

  69. Our favorite Valentine’s tradition that we want to do with our kids is helping them decorate cards for their grandparents.

  70. Our traditions are fairly new and growing! I usually leave hidden surprises for our family, nothing extravagant, a hershey kiss here and there quick notes letting them know they are love :) This year I plan on nabbing my husbands memory stick for his digital frame and putting a short video of our 18 month old daughter on it wishing him hippy viliiiiints da (translation Happy Valentines Day Daddy). I could see this becoming a yearly tradition
